Clean Water is a Human Right.
According to the World Health Organization, contaminated water is one of the leading causes of death in children under five worldwide.
In the steep and remote mountain slopes of East Bali, where many families rely solely on rainwater, clean water is not always a given. That’s why we’re partnering with the East Bali Poverty Project (EBPP) to support a life-changing rainwater harvesting initiative for the families of Darmaji and Manikaji Hamlets.
The solution? Cubangs — in-ground rainwater harvesting tanks built directly next to families' homes. These tanks collect and store roof rainwater during the wet season, ensuring families have a reliable water source during the dry season. Each cubang is built by the families themselves, under the supervision of EBPP's water team, fostering ownership, sustainability, and pride.
Each cubang costs approximately Rp6,400,000 IDR (about $400 USD) to build, using locally available materials and lasting over 50 years with no ongoing maintenance. They are covered with zinc roofing and protected from contamination. Since 2001, EBPP has helped build nearly 1,000 of these tanks, and they are still in use today.
As Pak Duri, a father of two and recent recipient, shared: "In the dry season, I had to ask neighbors for water. Now we have our own cubang, and my family is healthier and calmer."
Clean water brings more than hydration—it brings dignity, health, and peace of mind.
