ACTUM Giving × Win NYC: Standing With Families During the SNAP Disruption

Across New York City, thousands of families are navigating an unexpected crunch. On October 1, 2025, a federal government shutdown began after Congress failed to pass funding, which disrupted SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) operations and financing.

Because of the federal shutdown, November SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits have been delayed and, in many cases, reduced.

Following court orders, USDA is drawing on contingency reserves to partially fund November, but many households will receive reduced amounts and some payments may be delayed. For parents budgeting down to the dollar, uncertainty about when, or how much, assistance will arrive can mean skipped meals and hard choices.

For a family of three (for example, a single parent with two children), the maximum monthly SNAP amount in FY2026 is $785, with actual benefits varying based on income and deductions.

At ACTUM Giving, we believe food is a human right. No child or parent should face an empty plate. Over a five‑week span from November 1 to December 5, we’re partnering with Women In Need, Inc. (Win NYC), the largest family shelter provider in New York City, to help fill the gap for families affected by the SNAP disruption.

About the Partnership

Win NYC provides shelter and wraparound services to thousands of single mothers and their children each year, focusing on safe housing, education, employment, and family stability.

As the shutdown strained families who rely on SNAP, partnering with Win NYC was a natural step. Together, we’ve launched a food drive to keep nutritious staples on the table while benefits are delayed or partially funded.

Our goal: Raise $1,500 to assemble 180+ food bags filled with shelf‑stable essentials (rice, lentils, mac and cheese, ramen, oatmeal, granola bars, and more).

As of Nov 7, we’re already 50% to goal. If/when we surpass it, we’ll further fill the existing bags for distribution to the broader community rather than increasing bag count.

Each bag provides immediate relief, and a reminder that their community sees them, values them, and stands with them.

A Night of Community and Compassion

December 15 · 7–9 PM
Nook Café (Bushwick)

Volunteers will pack food items and write encouraging notes for families. We also encourage attendees to bring additional donations (food or non‑food essentials), which we’ll deliver to Win NYC. Partners from Global Impact Project and Lasting Change will also be in attendance.

Events like this reflect ACTUM Giving’s core mission: turning community into action. When neighbors unite around kindness, real impact follows.

Why This Matters

The shutdown has introduced real uncertainty for families depending on SNAP in NYC. Payment delays and partial disbursements ripple far beyond mealtime, affecting children’s health, parents’ ability to work, and family stability.

By providing immediate relief through food bags, ACTUM Giving and Win NYC are bridging the gap while shining a light on urban food insecurity. This work aligns with our broader mission: ensuring every child has access to food, water, shelter, education, and dignity.
