If you chose to celebrate the winter holiday season, it’s probably a special time for you. On the other hand, this time can become a reminder of prevailing issues for some.
Tammy and her strong group of women support the community of families in downtown San Diego during what should be times of celebration; birthdays, holidays, times of love.
Forget about birthday gifts - what about food scarcity?
What now has become a quarterly event for children that are living on a low income, Tammy and her team help alleviate parents and guardians of the constant pressure to provide for their children in circumstances that can be difficult - at least for one day.During this particular Christmas event, the kids were driven to a community center in La Mesa with music and funky lights in a fancy party bus - which exceeded everyone’s expectations. An ice cream truck was awaiting their arrival.
While the kiddos enjoyed their holiday party, Santa Clause and his elf friend made an appearance. Volunteers helped facilitate and organize their lunch. Some parents were there, others not. While Ismael and I were helping out and filming, we were able to also conversate with families. It felt like a privilege to assist a mother that brought her children here, she was watching her babies and enjoying every smile they let out. After lunch and activities, Santa announced it was time for presents.
Tammy and her team made sure every child had a gift that they wanted, whether it was a giant dollhouse or a skateboard.
This entire event was organized by Streets of Hope KIDS, on Tammy and her team's own time as well sponsors that donated every dollar. These kids will remember their Christmas of 2021 because Streets of Hope decided it was their responsibility to make every child feel like they deserved a present, and that every mother and father can feel supported.
